Vagus Speech Pathology is a mobile and clinic based speech pathology service specializing in assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of swallowing (including Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS)) and voice disorders (including voice restoration following laryngectomy, chronic cough, and upper airway disorders, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) for adults.

We are passionate about providing the highest of quality service with exceptional standards of professionalism, respect, integrity and openness to empower patients, encourage their independence and confidence as well as maintaining their dignity.

Our service is located with some of Newcastle’s finest Ear Nose and Throat Surgeons, Physiotherapist and Audiologist allowing for ease in facilitation of multidisciplinary and coordinated care.

All about
Dr Hollie-Ann Shortland

(PhD, B.Sp. Path., B.A., CPSP)
Hollie-Ann is a certified practicing Speech Pathologist and the director of Vagus Speech Pathology. She has 19 years’ experience in providing high level Speech Pathology care to adults presenting with swallowing and communication disorders in both the public and private sectors. Further, Hollie lectures and provides clinical education in the areas of swallowing, voice and practice education for Speech Pathology students through the University of Newcastle.

Hollie’s experience over her Speech Pathology career so far has extended clinically across the areas of head & neck surgery, neurology/neurosurgery, trauma, aged care, palliative care, respiratory and general medicine caseloads. However, her clinical expertise is in the area of complex swallowing disorders (including assessment with Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS)), voice/laryngeal dysfunction (including chronic cough, upper airway disorders) and Laryngectomy (voice prosthesis management/replacement) and Tracheostomy care.

It is a combination of Hollie’s clinical work over the past 19 years and her passion for improving the quality of life for those with swallowing difficulties that has also led her to further pursue higher studies with her completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (Speech Pathology) through the University of Newcastle in 2023.
